We heard Jim Fay speak today. He told some great stories and gave some sound principles for dealing with students/ kids. Here are a few of the things I picked up on:
Never argue with your kids. Learn to just say "I know" and "nice try". Always show empathy. Delay consequences and hold kids accountable for their actions. Say "We'll have to do something about this." and then take the time to come up with a logical consequence that will be effective. Never let the child's problem become your problem. He also talked about letting them make little mistakes while the price tag is low and teaching them how to solve their own problems.
